What Is Intensive Silviculture, and Why Is It Important?
Intensive Silviculture (hereinafter abbreviated as SILIN) is one of the cultivation techniques in forest management, especially production forest (both natural forest and plantation forest). SILIN is referred to as a cultivation technique that not only simplifies forest cover maintenance but also increases the value or volume of logging. In Indonesia, SILIN is mentioned under the Regulation of the Minister of Forestry Number P.65 of 2014 (amendment to P.11 of 2009) on the Silvicultural System in the Area of Timber Forest Products Utilization Business Permits in Production Forests (IUPHHK-HP). This regulation was later revoked with the stipulation of Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number P.8 of 2021 on Forest Management and Development of Forest Management Plan, as well as Forest Utilization in Protected Forests and Production Forests. SILIN is considered a solution that can improve productivity so that forestry businesses run normally and sustainably, on par with other businesses in terms of properly paying their workers and providing employment, as well as creating new forest products.
The conditions of natural production forest that tend to be increasingly damaged and the implementation of cultivation systems which are considered unable to keep up with the increasing rate of timber demand due to decreased production as well as decreased area and quality of production forests are said to be the background for the implementation of SILIN. For example, privately owned forests in Gunungkidul District, Yogyakarta Special Region, have tried to meet the increasing market demand for teak (Tectona grandis) by increasing the area and production of community forests. However, conventional cultivation techniques used by community forest smallholders cause the quality and selling price of the timber produced to be much lower than the teak from Perum Perhutani. SILIN combines three main elements in forest cultivation techniques, namely (1) the use of superior seeds; (2) environmental manipulation (to provide optimal sunlight and fertile soil); and (3) integrated pest control. The use of genetically superior seeds and planting them in optimal conditions are able to generate forest products with superior quality, competitive prices, and efficient and sustainable use of forest land.
